Elaith Craulnober :aka: “The Serpent”
Age-unknown race-moon elf gender-male class-fighter, wizard play by: James Franco
(this is a long and good one)
Elaith Craulnober is a moon elf crimelord living in the city of Waterdeep. He is often portrayed as a cunning and opportunistic elven rogue with an infamous reputation, and has a high degree of training as a fighter-wizard. Elaith Craulnober is described as a tall elven noble with sharp, handsome features and a graceful build. He is described to be as tall as Arilyn Moonblade (making his height approximately 5'8") Elaith has silver hair and the pale skin common to his people, the moon elves (gray elves). His eyes are often portrayed as having an amber color. He favors his trademark black cape and elven daggers, which he often uses to solidify his already fearsome reputation. He is often likened to a "silver snake" because of his appearance, which gave him his alias, "The Serpent". Elaith is a tragic character who seemingly never recovered from his initial fall. His descent from the Captain of the King's guard on Evermeet to the brutal and heartless crime lord he is today has given him oft contrasting qualities. Before meeting Arilyn Moonblade, Elaith has been a heartless crime lord with a penchant for cruelty. He was portrayed as a manipulative and evil elf whose canny intelligence managed him a worthy position among Waterdeep's nobility. Elaith is also portrayed as a very proud elf, where any slight made to him is answered brutally. Despite his often unforgiving manner, Elaith has a twisted sense of honor, and seems to fully respect (albeit in a twisted fashion) many elven traditions - including his use of "Elf-friend". Recently, Elaith has undergone a drastic change. He has become more questioning in his moralities, and even began to actively seek redemption - through any means possible. Currently, Elaith is still an evil crimelord, albeit with a slightly smaller cruel streak. Foremost to his abilities would be his fearsome reputation and his willingness to commit the vilest, cruelest acts. Elaith has honed his reputation to a point where he is nigh untouchable in the City of Waterdeep. He is also the owner of a large portion of the city and numerous magical trinkets, not to mention a fortune in gold. Elaith often prefers to hire mercenaries to perform his illegal activities for him. Aside from his wealth and reputation, Elaith is also very capable in combat. Elaith, the Serpent, is popularly known for his quickness and agility - even after elven standards. Elaith is also a master in wielding daggers, and often dual wields them to confuse (or to toy with) his opponents. He has also exhibited various magical capabilities, including scrying and invisibility. Elaith is also quite familiar with the criminal underground, and practices larceny quite easily. He is known to deactivate locks and traps with ease. And he is also known for blending well into shadows. Whether he performs these by mundane means, or by magical means is still up to debate. Elaith is a veritable collector of magical items, and as such, his entire inventory would be impossible to note. His more notable magical trinkets are listed at the bottom. Elaith's strongest bond was with the Princess Amnestria of Evermeet, Arilyn Moonblade's mother, and his supposed bethrothed. Elaith left her and the elven community after he was rejected by his Moonblade - inflicting himself with a self-imposed exile. Elaith's unresolved emotion for the princess is as such that it is one of the few things that can break his iron self control. Elaith has two children, although only one of them is known to him. Azariah Craulnober, for whom he sacrificed a lot to recover the dormant Moonblade, is currently being fostered in Evermeet and being trained as blade-heir. Elaith also has a son by the Princess Amnestria. However, she gave birth to him in secret after Elaith moved to Waterdeep. The lost prince's story has not yet been told. Elaith's other closest companion was, ironically, the harper who was formerly his most hated enemy, Danilo Thann. Elaith named Danilo Thann an elf-friend in return for the Waterdhavian bard saving his life, though he has been known to refer to this as an act of supreme folly. He views the half-elven assassin Arilyn Moonblade as elven royalty - and possibly as the daughter he never had with Princess Amnestria. Initially mistaking her for Princess Amnestria, he has forged a tentative alliance with the brooding half-elf. Elaith has professed a seething hatred for Arilyn's human father, the Harper Bran Skorlskun - a former friend. Whether this hatred stems from his human heritage, or to the human's inability to protect Amnestria, or to the fact that she loved the human more than she loved him - is unclear. Elaith also briefly met the charming rogue, Bronwyn Caradoon, secretly a Harper Agent sent to sabotage one of his plans. He has displayed an uncharacteristic attraction with Bronwyn, an attraction that constantly prevented him from killing the sly female rogue. He also has a somewhat awkward "treaty" with Khelben "Blackstaff" Arunsun and the Lady Larael, as he had saved the archmage's life from a powerful charmed state.
history--- Elaith was formerly a captain of the guard on Evermeet, until he was disgraced and exiled from the island. He had formerly been betrothed to Princess Amnestria, the mother of Arilyn Moonblade, and harbors a deep regret about it. He soon became a rogue elf, and began building his own underground empire in Waterdeep. He acquired a reputation for ruthlessness as both an assassin and crimelord, which he went to great lengths to keep for some time. He has a fondness for magical items, and also owns a Moonblade, though his was dormant for quite some time, due to his activities. Elaith met Danilo Thann and Arilyn Moonblade and aided them in their quest to find the Harper Assassin. However, despite Elaith's fondness for Arilyn, he had his own personal agenda and vendetta - which caused no little difficulty for the pair. Especially Danilo Thann, whom he arranged to be assassinated - a job he later rescinded. He later aided both of them in solving the puzzle to finally defeat Kymil Nimesin and his personal plan to usurp the elven throne. Then Elaith hesitantly joined forces with his hated enemy, Danilo Thann - in order to solve a riddle of the ancient Green Dragon, Grimnoshtadrano - and to hunt down an artifact to stop a sorceress from destroying Waterdeep. With a rag-tag army of minstrels, mercenaries, and riddlemasters - Elaith and Danilo solved the riddle and regained the artifact, wherein Elaith finally reveals his true intentions. He steals the artifact in an attempt to reactivate his dormant Moonblade to rehonor his bloodline for his new daughter, Azariah Craulnober. The Moonblade was later reactivated, not because of the artifact, but because of his selfless sacrifice for his daughter. Later, Elaith discovers the magical qualities of the Dream Spheres - a mercantile product used to create dreamscapes for the upper nobility of Waterdeep. In an attempt to test the "evil" of his soul, Elaith took a legendary intelligent telkiira—a magical artifact used to magnify a person's magical capability. Legend says that the telkiira would bend an ordinary person's soul to evil, but if wielded by a truly vile being, the artifact would bow down to his will completely. Temporarily fooled by a false copy of the artifact, Elaith, believing himself beyond redemption, sank down to the evil streak of cruelty and ruthlessness he was previously known for. However, at the end, he once again aided Arilyn and Danilo in destroying the evil telkiira to restore order in Waterdeep.
Magical Items
Arilyn Moonblade
Age-around 40 race-half elf gender-female class-fighter, rogue play by: herself
Arilyn Moonblade is a half-elf assassin. Her ears are pointed and she has retained her youthful appearance and vitality even into middle age. Her eyes are blue, flecked with gold, and she has a more human build than elvish, though her skin is still quite fair. She has black hair and a hint of blue beneath her skin and generally looks more like an elf. Arilyn was raised in the elven city of Evereska. When she was fifteen years old, her mother was killed by a pair of common street thugs. From that time on, she carried her mother's sword, a moonblade from which she has adopted her surname. For the next decade or so, she studied swordsmanship under the tutelage of one of the teachers for the academy in the city. Afterwards, when she left, she became an assassin for the Harpers, though she herself did not join the organization until later. She was a Harper for a while, but left them after undertaking a rescue mission for Isabeau Thionne, a noblewoman from Tethyr, whom she considered to be not worth rescuing. Arilyn's moonblade is a hereditary elven sword, which has many different powers. Perhaps the most notable is that it tries to kill any unsuitable wielder who tries to hold the sword. It has nine different symbols on the blade, each representing a different power given to it by one of the wielders. The moonstone in the hilt enables each successive wielder to grant a power to the sword over a period of time. The different powers include: An abnormally fast swing to the sword, protecting the holder from fire, glowing blue to warn of close danger, silent warnings of danger, dreams warning of danger, projecting illusions to disguise the wielder, a portal between Faerûn and Evermeet known as an elfgate, and the ability to call forth the shadows of those who previously held the sword, or the wielder's own shadow. Arilyn's mark grants the blade the ability to glow green to warn her when the wild elves of the Wealdath are in danger. She uses the two-handed style of wielding the sword in honor of her deceased mother. Arilyn's mother was Princess Amnestria of Evermeet, and her father Bran Skorlskun, a human ranger. Amnestria's power that was added to the sword was the elfgate, which was judged extremely dangerous should word of it ever escape. Because of this the moonstone was removed from the hilt and (after replaced with a topaz) entrusted to Bran. Amnestria, who moved to Evereska under the name Z'beryl, was killed by a pair of thugs. Bran continued to wander Faerûn until he returned to Arilyn in the city of Waterdeep, where the moonstone and the moonblade were reunited. He has maintained sporadic contact with her ever since. Arilyn became romantically involved with the noble Danilo Thann, with whom she travelled and later to whom she became married. Arilyn had kept Danilo at a distance for some time, until she managed to make peace with her past, her elven side and family, and with herself, finally able to accept Danilo's honest affection and love for her. Along the way she had a brief, but passionate, relationship with the wood elf chieftain Foxfire while helping defend his tribe in Tethyr. Arilyn has established links with her family on Evermeet, at first through the young and liberal Prince Lamruil and later with Queen Amlaruil Moonflower, when Arilyn proved herself by thwarting the machinations of Kymil Nimesin, who was conniving to bring about the end of Moonflower rule on Evermeet. Arilyn herself was unexpectedly assisted in this by the ambiguous Waterdhavian crime lord Elaith Craulnober, who is fond of her. It is then that Arilyn and Danilo finally formalize their relationship, overcoming their past issues and the opposition of his formidable mother, who disapproves of her son's half elven love, an opposition hinting at secrets in the family.
Danilo Thann
Age-around 30 race-human gender-male class-aristocrat, wizard, spellsinger play by: Peter Facinelli
Danilo Thann is a young Waterdhavian nobleman of House Thann the sixth son of Rhammas and Cassandra. He is also an ex-Harper as well as a former Lord of Waterdeep. While first and foremost married to Arilyn Moonblade, Danilo counts many other great Faerûnians among the ranks of those to whom he is close. When faced by the public, Danilo acts like a complete fool; he is however, in reality, a skilled spellcaster and a crafty adversary, being trained by none other than his uncle Khelben "Blackstaff" Arunsun. His skill with magic is such that he mastered the art of spellsong in just a few days, was able to charm a magically-resistant dragon to slumber and his illusionary pranks fool his uncle Khelben each time. Danilo is also well versed with subterfuge, disguise and the manipulation of political and social threads in any given situation. His degree of expertise is as such that when he engaged the crimelord Elaith Craulnober in a verbal sparring match, it ended as a draw. Though he is portrayed publicly as an inept nobleman, even a dandy, there are moments of intelligence within this mask through which very few notice the truth of his character. Despite his canny intelligence and skill in subterfuge, Danilo is actually quite reckless, a fact brought to light through his alternate ego's naughty pranks and reckless magical experiments. There are times when Danilo completely forgets his true self and fully reverts into the comfortable guise of the fool. However, when faced with the truly important, Danilo always acts as a serious, calculating and very dangerous adversary. Danilo and Arilyn, who is the half-elven granddaughter of Queen Amlaruil of Evermeet, have long adventured together; additionally, Danilo has pushed Arilyn into reconciling with her elven family. Danilo's father, Lord Rhammas Thann is largely impotent in the family business dealings, preferring to live quietly off the proceeds that Lady Cassandra Thann makes. The Lady is a formidable person who disapproves of Danilo's various exploits to some degree. She has elven blood, but has never mentioned it, as there is some animosity towards elves in the Waterdhavian nobility. Danilo has five brothers and a deceased half-sister, Lilly Thann. Danilo has been named an elf-friend by the rogue Elaith Craulnober and has also befriended the rogue drow Liriel Baenre.
Liriel Baenre
Age-unknown race-drow gender-female class-fighter, cleric, wizard play by: herself
Liriel Baenre is a drow fighter and mage, and is a royal member of House Baenre, the first house of Menzoberranzan. Liriel has a sardonic and witty personality and is described as one of the most beautiful drow females in Menzoberranzan. Liriel is the only known daughter of Gromph Baenre, archmage of Menzoberranzan. Her mother was Sosdrielle Vandree. Drow almost always trace their descent matrilineally, but Gromph recognized Liriel's magical potential when she was a child, and killed her mother in order to be able to take her into House Baenre. This was possible because Gromph has a much higher station in Menzoberranzan than the typical male drow. At the age of five, Liriel was placed by Gromph under the magical instruction of Xandra Shobalar, but Xandra was told to keep this a secret. She excelled at her studies immediately and in a few years she had outgrown the ability of all of her peers, inciting the envy of Xandra. She shared a bedroom with Xandra's daughter, Bythnara Shobalar. Liriel privately coined the term "the mask" to refer to the facade she displayed when required of her. It was a neutral expression of apparent ignorance designed to hide her true emotions. Liriel was given a vial of holding and a pair of boots of elvenkind by Gromph before the Blooding ritual began. When her prey was revealed to be the human wizard Tresk Mulander, she refused to take part in the ritual, believing that she should face a more monstrous creature, but both Xandra and her mother, Hinkutes'nat Alar Shobalar, insisted. It was at this moment that Liriel realized Xandra wanted her dead. Xandra also gave her the key to the amulet of containment around Tresk's neck, although she did not explain its function. Liriel was caught by surprise by Tresk and a magical battle ensued, but she soon came to realize that he was only using drow magic and that he knew a great deal about drow tactics. Liriel was able to cast a spell to disrupt Tresk's piwafwi, proof to her that Tresk had been equipped. When he summoned a darkenbeast from a concealed mole on his body, Liriel was forced to use much of her magical strength against it, after which she capitulated. She threw the key to Tresk, which she had placed in the vial of holding. Tresk opened the vial without realizing what it was and became imprisoned within. Liriel returned to Menzoberranzan where she smashed the vial, unleashing Tresk, who attacked Xandra. She slew Tresk but not without suffering a deep wound to her face. Although Xandra tried to claim that the Blooding had not been fulfilled because Liriel had brought back Tresk alive, Liriel's argument was that she had been entitled to use whatever weapon she preferred to kill Tresk, and she had used Xandra as a weapon. This view was upheld by Hinkutes'nat, and Liriel was accepted as having fulfilled the Blooding. She soon found the restrictions of Arach-Tinilith, where she was subsequently enrolled, too binding. Using a book given to her by her father, Liriel traveled to the surface lands where she met drow followers of Eilistraee, the Dark Maiden of benevolent drow. Caught up in the plots of the Vhaeraunite merchant-turned-mercenary band the Dragon's Hoard, Liriel—a powerful mage, warrior and ex-priestess of Lolth—led a struggle against them with the help of her friends, a human Rashemi barbarian named Fyodor, the mutant two-headed deep dragon Zz'Pzora, and the Eilistraeean forces of Qilué Veladorn. Settling for a life on the surface, Liriel found herself hunted by her House and father. She traveled across the ocean with Fyodor, who became her lover and friend, and a pirate named Hrolf, who took her in as a daughter. Liriel's adventures caused drastic consequences for all drow, including the return of her aunt Quenthel to her old House, as well as allowing drow magic to function on the surface.
